New Art + Society6 Shop Updates!

I’m making fun new art and adding this work to my Society6 shop.

I got an iPad* + Apple Pencil and have been playing with ProCreate.

I love that I can play with lots of different types of media without getting all the materials out and making a mess. (It’s not the same, but I like being able to make a fun mixed-media abstract painting right from the couch.) This new ability has helped me stay creative even when I’m overwhelmed.

*Note to creatives thinking about purchasing an iPad: I went with the regular iPad—not the iPad Pro—because it does what I wanted and costs a ton less. I don’t need lots of power. I need a tablet on which I can draw, use the Adobe apps, and try new art apps.

Midcentury modern and trendy art inspired these pieces. The floating blobs you see in my paintings below are ubiquitous right now, but are fun to make (which is probably why you see them everywhere!). I’m using these pieces to find new ways to recolor art, but mostly to help my brain understand how to create multi-layered patterns so I can create more sophisticated repeat patterns.

I painted three different digital mixed media paintings, created several different colorways, and uploaded to products on my Society6 shop. These paintings were all inspired by photos and color palettes from my recent New Orleans trip (which I have yet to blog about, oops!).

I’ve also been working with markers.

Markers are my all-time favorite medium. I have a huge box of Prismacolor markers (a.k.a. the best Christmas present ever!) left from my undergrad*, and I LOVE using them. I’ve been into writing lyrics to songs onto marker paper and morphing them into psychedelic illustrations inspired by the fashion of Emilio Pucci and poster art of Tadanori Yokoo. I titled this series “Psychedellic Alternatives” because I mostly used ’90s alternative lyrics (I know you’re shocked!).

*Note to creatives on the fence about purchasing Prismacolor markers: I’ve had these since 2005 and 97% of them are still “juicy” and like brand new. A few colors I use often are in need of replacement, but they are damn good for 14-year-old markers.

I scanned these marker drawings, edited them in Photoshop to create additional colorways, and uploaded to products in my Society6 shop.

What have you been making lately?
