Recently, one of my favorite people contacted me and asked if I would make him a special gift for his special lady for her special day. Well, isn’t that special?
He confessed that he recently started dating somebody and that one of the first things that she said to him was “Let’s be weird together.” So, naturally, he asked if I could make him something with her quote on it. I’ve been dying to dig into a real handlettering project and have been filling up my sketchbook with ideas. I decided to take this opportunity to work on something fun.
I focused on the making the word “weird” … well … weird.
I drew the original on my Fabriano Dot notebook (love — you get a grid but it doesn’t get in the way) and used tracing paper to piece it together. I didn’t ink this, but instead took it directly into Photoshop and cleaned it up a bit and added a watercolor background. I wanted to keep the hand-made feel and not get too into vectorizing it. I felt that it would lose a lot of the movement that way.
Here’s the finished piece.
I printed this using Walgreens’ photo service and put it in a cute frame.
Here’s the finished product. I hope she likes it.
It’s not perfect, but I’m proud that I finished a handmade type piece and put it in public. I’ve been keeping the sketches to myself because I judge them harshly. I think I’m going to make a habit of putting this stuff out there, whether or not it’s perfect. It shows that I enjoy what I do and I’m making something, which makes me happy.

Do you have a significant other? Did s/he say something adorable to you that’s worth permanently inking?
PS: I scheduled this one on her birthday but wrote it a while ago just so I don’t accidentally spoil the surprise!
